Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences

As a professional student organization for all FACS majors, we strive to prepare our members for their post-graduation situation, whether that is the job market, entrepreneurship, or graduate school.

Meeting Dates

  • Check out our Instagram (@safcsatuga) for more details!

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of everymonth at 6pm in Dawson Hall.

The Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (SAFCS) student members who pay yearly dues gain membership on the local level in our collegiate SAFCS chapter. At monthly meetings, SAFCS members interact with students from all departments within the college, participate in community service projects, and learn professional development skills through various programs. Members are also affiliated with FCCLA Alumni and Associates.

Students in the College of Family and Consumer Science are encouraged to become members of the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). AAFCS is the only national forum where K-12 teachers, university educators, and corporate executives collaborate to improve the quality of individual and family life.  The annual $50 dues gives you membership in both AAFCS and the Georgia Affiliate of AAFCS,  and also includes the online Journal of Family & Consumer Sciences, membership in the online AAFCS Member forum and Student Unit forum and preferred member pricing on the premier event for FCS student and professionals, the AAFCS Annual Conference & Expo.

At the state level, students can attend meetings of the Georgia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and at the national level the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. SAFCS helps students broaden their horizons through leadership opportunities, community service and interaction with some of the top professionals in their areas of study. Students can enjoy camaraderie, refreshments and door prizes at each meeting.

How to join SAFCS/AAFCCLA

Joining the Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (SAFCS) also grants membership to Alumni and Associates of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (AAFCCLA)! The 2 organizations work closely together, so by paying dues for SAFCS you will automatically become a member of AAFCCLA.

  1. Attend a monthly SAFCS meeting and pay dues ($15 for the year) within 2 meetings of your first meeting. (Contact the Executive Director or the Director of Finance if you need assistance with this!)
  2. Search “SAFCS” (direct link) on Facebook and request to join our group!

Service Component

Each meeting incorporates a service component following a departmental theme that allows the members to give back to the Athens community. Outside service projects are implented throughout the semester.

For the month of September, members donated 73 pounds of peanut better to the Foodbank of Northeast Georgia for Food 2 Kids. While dropping off the peanut butter, members helped the Food Bank get ready for the fall season by preparing some pie pumpkins. Almost 3,000 pounds of pumpkins were cleaned!
