  Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

  I'm a rising Junior from Statesboro Georgia. I was heavily involved in my High school's band program and was Drum major Junior and Senior year.

  What are you studying, and why did you choose your major?

  I'm majoring in Consumer Economics with an emphasis in applied analytics and am currently in the double dawgs program for the applied analytics masters. I also am minoring in Human Development and Family Sciences. I chose this major and minor combo as it provides a wonderful blend of microeconomics and the social sciences, both subjects I love.

  What has been your favorite class/instructor at FACS?

  I've loved all of the economics classes I've taken but my favorite would have to be intro to consumer economics because it was taught by Dr. Moorman who has such an amazing and engaging personality. I am taking another of her classes this upcoming semester and am really looking forward to it.

  How has the scholarship/award impacted your education and life? Or How has receiving the award shaped your view of philanthropy?

  This scholarship was very impactful to me as it helped my expenses while living in Atlanta for the FACS legislative aide program. This was an amazing opportunity to me offered through the FACS college that landed me an internship with representative Stacey Evans at the State Capitol. While the program did include a stipend, Atlanta living is extremely costly and the funds from the Mize-Infinity scholarship directly supported my ability to live in Atlanta and participate in this amazing program.

  What do you like to do outside of class — hobbies, interests, secret talents?

  Aside from classes, my other major commitment is as a member of the Redcoat Marching Band. As I mentioned, I was heavily involved in my high school band program, and this continues at UGA. I have marched clarinet the last two seasons with the RCB and am uniform chair for this upcoming season as well as being in a leadership role for my section. I intend to be in the RCB for as long as I'm at Georgia and have made amazing friends and memories because of the band.

  What is/was your favorite place on campus and why?

  Myers quad is definitely my favorite place on campus. I lived in the Myers quad community Freshman and Sophomore year and have great memories hanging out with friends during events and playing various games on the quad.

  What are your future goals following graduation? How do you plan to use your FACS “knowledge for real life” to make a difference in your community or field?

  I am still actively exploring career options after graduation but am confident I have picked a field and specialty that interests me. I am hoping that I will be able to make a real change in the world using a mix of the more analytical and 'number crunching' skills as well as the more personal and 'human based' knowledge that the FACS college has taught me.

  Anna Faye Dupree

  Anna Faye Dupree grew up in Calhoun, GA in a bustling household with five siblings.  

  She began playing soccer and taking dance lessons at a very young age, continuing with soccer until her sophomore year of high school and dancing through graduation. During high school, Anna Faye volunteered at a local preschool, taught creative movement dance classes, organized and led summer dance camps, provided childcare for various families, and spent quality time with her younger siblings and cousins. Working with children has always brought her joy.

  What are you studying, and why did you choose your major?

  I am currently a senior enrolled in the Double Dawgs program, pursuing a bachelor's degree in dietetics and a master's degree in community nutrition. My passion for serving others led me to the field of healthcare, although I was unsure about the specific area. During my freshman year, I discovered the role of a dietitian, prompting me to switch my major from kinesiology to dietetics. This shift was also motivated by my personal experiences with my younger sister, who has Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease, as well as my brother and another sister, who have multiple food allergies. Integrating my interest in nutrition, personal experiences, and desire to help others has guided me to my current path of studying nutrition. 

  What has been your favorite class/instructor at FACS?

  I thoroughly enjoyed the class Food Principles, taught by Dr. Brigman. Given my love for being in the kitchen, our hands-on cooking and baking experiences in the lab were the highlight of that semester. Additionally, I found the lectures very interesting. The stories Dr. Brigman shared during class enriched my learning experience and brought to life some of the content we covered. I regularly visited her during office hours to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the course material. Dr. Brigman has played a pivotal role in my academic and personal growth, and I am thankful for her mentorship.

  Receiving the Julia Ann Simpson Elliott Scholarship was such an honor. This scholarship not only provided me with financial assistance but also ignited a greater determination in me to reach my academic goals. One of the most notable effects of this award was the freedom it gave me to dedicate more time to my studies and participate in leadership and professional development opportunities within FACS. 

  The Julia Ann Simpson Elliott Scholarship allowed me to travel with the FACS Nutritional Science Department on the Nutrition Tour of Italy and Croatia Study Abroad in the summer of 2023. During this study abroad, we “mastered” the art of making pasta, toured a Parmigiano Reggiano cheese making factory, and visited an olive oil mill to learn how to taste olive oil and determine its quality. We explored the beaches of Croatia and immersed ourselves in the charming towns of Italy. It was also during this trip that a lasting friendship with Lindsey Lee was sparked. Although the experiences were undeniably incredible, the connections formed with others are what I cherish most from this trip.

  What is/was your favorite place on campus and why?

  Dawson Hall! I always see a friendly face when I am there studying or walking the halls. I especially love the new picnic area built on the patio outside. 

  What are your future goals following graduation? How do you plan to use your FACS “knowledge for real life” to make a difference in your community or field?

  I will earn my Master’s in Community Nutrition from the University of Georgia and complete a dietetic internship to become a registered dietitian working in pediatric endocrinology. 

  Through completing various case studies and class assignments, I have learned about nutrition disease prevention and treatment guidelines and how to apply this knowledge in real-life situations. Dr. Laing has been particularly instrumental in teaching me more about these topics and emphasizing the importance of serving others with empathy and compassion. This awareness is an invaluable asset as I pursue a career in the healthcare field, where I will encounter patients from diverse backgrounds. My FACS education will greatly benefit me both personally and professionally, and I will carry the wisdom and confidence the faculty has instilled in me into my future endeavors.

  Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

  I recently graduated in May with my BCFCS, summa cum laude, majoring in Human Development and Family Science and minoring in Social Work. I am from Savannah, Georgia, and am proud to be a first-generation college graduate. As a Jewish individual, the concept of Tikkun Olam, or "repairing the world," is a central principle of my faith and resonates deeply with me. This concept has inspired my academic and professional pursuits, driving my passion for helping others and making a positive impact in my community. My education and experiences have equipped me with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of individuals and families, and I am committed to continuing this work in my future career.

  What are you studying, and why did you choose your major?

  I am studying Human Development & Family Science (HDFS), with a minor in social work. I chose HDFS as my major because I love that the content focuses on understanding the complexities of human relationships and development across the lifespan and also resonates with my passion for helping others. Additionally, I appreciate the flexibility the major offers in terms of career options, allowing me to explore various paths as I continue to refine my professional aspirations post-graduation.

  What has been your favorite class/instructor at FACS?

  My favorite instructor at FACS has been Dr. Melissa Scott Kozak. I've taken nearly every course she offers, and I especially loved her Human Sexuality Across the Lifespan class. It's clear that she genuinely cares about her students' success. Dr. Kozak was incredibly supportive during my internship process and made me feel well-prepared as I approached graduation.

  How has the scholarship/award impacted your education and life? Or how has receiving the award shaped your view of philanthropy?

  The Whitlock Family Scholarship has profoundly impacted my education and life. It allowed me to fully concentrate on my studies without the constant worry about the financial burdens of college. This financial support not only relieved a significant amount of stress for me but also took a tremendous load off my parents, who have worked tirelessly to support my academic aspirations. The scholarship has truly been a game-changer, enabling me to pursue my educational goals with a sense of security and peace of mind. This experience has also shaped my view of philanthropy, highlighting the incredible difference that generous support can make in someone's life. Seeing how much this scholarship has improved my college experience, I hope to one day make a similar impact in others’ lives as well.

  Can you share a memorable experience or achievement since receiving the scholarship?

  One of the most memorable experiences since receiving the scholarship was finally seeing the fireworks at graduation, with my family in the stands supporting me. This moment felt like coming full circle, as I vividly remember the fireworks I saw when I opened my acceptance letter four years prior. The Whitlock Family Scholarship not only provided the financial support I needed but also gave me the confidence and motivation to make it to that unforgettable moment of celebration.

  What would you like to say to the donors who have supported your education?

  I cannot thank the Whitmore family enough for their generosity! Their generosity has profoundly impacted my life, allowing me to focus on my studies and achieve my academic goals without the burden of financial stress. Their investment in my education has been a true gift, and I am committed to honoring it by striving for excellence and contributing positively to my community.

  What do you like to do outside of class — hobbies, interests, secret talents?

  Outside of class, I am an avid reader and love diving into different genres and exploring new authors. I also occasionally like to paint, go to trivia with friends, and when I’m home, volunteer at GHC Hospice. Additionally, thanks to a P.E. Bowling course I took during my senior year at UGA, I've become a pretty decent bowler!

  What is/was your favorite place on campus and why?

  My favorite place on campus is the Tate Student Center. It's a hub of activity where you can always find something exciting happening, whether its student organizations giving out freebies, or just running into friends between classes. Despite the hustle and bustle, I also appreciate that I can find quiet corners to hunker down and study when needed.

  What are your future goals following graduation? How do you plan to use your FACS “knowledge for real life” to make a difference in your community or field?

  Following graduation, I am currently exploring opportunities in Savannah within the human services field, as I am passionate about making a positive impact in my community. While I am still figuring out the specifics of my post-graduation plans, I am certain that I want to work with children in some capacity. My education in HDFS has equipped me with invaluable knowledge and skills that I am eager to apply in practice. I consistently find connections to HDFS material in my daily life, which reaffirms my commitment to utilizing this "knowledge for real life" to benefit others. Whether through direct service, advocacy, or program development, I am determined to make a difference and contribute meaningfully to the well-being of children and families, embodying the principles of Tikkun Olam in my professional pursuits.

  Leynie Hester

  What are you studying, and why did you choose your major?

  My name is Leynie Hester, and I’m a rising Junior at the University of Georgia. My major is Fashion Merchandising, with a Product Development and Design emphasis. I am also pursuing a minor in both Studio Art and General Business, as well as a certificate in Sustainability! I’ve loved fashion for so long, especially the concept of sustainable fashion. However, I didn’t know I wanted to go into fashion until about five years ago, when I got incredibly interested in the second hand clothing market. I learned so much about thrifted and vintage clothing, and from then on, I knew I wanted to help make a positive impact socially and environmentally within the fashion industry. 

  Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

  Growing up in Gwinnett County, Georgia, I got so many incredible opportunities to learn from my beautifully diverse peers. Throughout high school, I worked hard in my leadership positions to create a community of love and respect, where all people felt welcomed and valued. I love being involved in leadership positions because I get the incredible opportunity to truly make an impact on my community. I stood up for what I believed in, motivated my peers to be the best they could be, and made changes where it matters. 

  What do you like to do outside of class — hobbies, interests, secret talents?

  After graduating and working extremely hard in high school, I knew that college was my first experience to study creative fields and dive into my artistic passions. I immediately got involved in the plethora of fashion related communities at UGA, like Fair Fashion and Strike Magazine. Fair Fashion is a club which focuses on educating and impacting the local community concerning slow and sustainable fashion. Strike Magazine is a creative explorative fashion and culture magazine that publishes issues bi-annually. I have also gotten the chance to be the sustainability chain in my sorority, Delta Zeta, own my own thrift and vintage small business, ANSL Vintage, intern at the men's clothing store, Kempt, in Downtown Athens, model in the Fashion Design Student Association fashion shows, and work as a server at one of my favorite restaurants.

  How has the scholarship/award impacted your education and life? Or How has receiving the award shaped your view of philanthropy?

  Receiving scholarships through the generous and philanthropic efforts of the Family and Consumer Sciences college and community has been such an extreme blessing to me. As much as I like to keep myself busy, involved in several clubs, taking 15-18 hours a semester, and holding 2-3 jobs, these scholarships have taken the financial pressure off of me. Now, I get to focus my energy and time on the things that push me to be a more creative individual and better prepare me for my future in the fashion industry, instead of spending my free time working to pay for school. Additionally, these scholarships have allowed me the financial freedom to pursue study abroad opportunities!

  Can you share a memorable experience or achievement since receiving the scholarship?

  Last spring break, I was so lucky to be able to study abroad for the week in Hawaii, through Warnell’s Discover Abroad programs. This trip as a whole taught me so much about sustainable living and protecting our Earth, including the people on it. Along with that, Hawaii left me with memories and friendships I will never forget. One of my favorite memories was when the whole class went on a snorkeling trip, and we learned about all the native fish we saw, we saw a huge sea turtle, and beyond the break a pack of whales were passing through. It was such a beautiful display of the natural harmony of the seas, and how so many diverse creatures can co-exist in the same ecosystem. 

  What would you like to say to the donors who have supported your education?

  To the donors who have supported me and my journey at UGA, I am so eternally grateful for your generosity. I would not be where I am, or have nearly as many involvements, or have half the opportunities I have been given without your philanthropic efforts. These scholarships are truly such a blessing to any student who may be lucky enough to receive them, no matter how big or small. Your investment in my future has given me the confidence and the tools to make the absolute most out of my experience here at UGA, and has prepared me for a beautiful future yet to come.   Austin Mills

  Austin Mills is a PhD student in the Nutritional Sciences department and a dedicated member of Emily Noble’s Nutritional Neuroscience Lab at the University of Georgia (UGA). Born and raised in Iowa, Austin completed his Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry, with a minor in Spanish, at Coe College, a small liberal arts institution in Cedar Rapids, in 2020. This interdisciplinary academic background not only prepared Austin for the rigors of graduate school but also sparked his passion for exploring the connections between diverse fields of study.

  Before beginning his doctoral journey, Austin gained valuable professional experience as a research associate at Biomimicry Design Alliance (BDA), a start-up focused on integrating biology and engineering to develop sustainable architectural solutions inspired by nature. In this role, Austin conducted biological research to translate natural processes into design principles that could be applied in sustainable construction. Following his tenure at BDA, he worked as a process development scientist for a company that manufactures fluid bed equipment for pharmaceutical production. It was during this time that Austin’s desire for deeper learning and academic exploration reignited, prompting his return to graduate studies.

  Austin’s research at UGA’s Nutritional Neuroscience Lab centers on the neural regulation of eating specifically, how various brain molecules influence feeding behavior and the impact of different diets on brain structure and function. His fascination with nutrition and the brain, combined with personal experiences overcoming an eating disorder, drive his commitment to this field. Austin credits his liberal arts education for equipping him to thrive in a discipline that bridges the science of nutrition with behavioral neuroscience.

  Among the standout faculty at UGA, Austin highlights Dr. Dee Warmath, whose expertise and engaging teaching style have had a significant impact on his academic journey. Dr. Warmath’s course on the Social Psychology of Consumer Decision Making remains one of Austin’s most memorable classes, thanks to her wealth of industry experience and relatable storytelling.

  Austin’s heartfelt gratitude for the support he has received from scholarships cannot be overstated. He acknowledges that financial contributions from donors relieve stress in a college student’s life by easing the financial burden of tuition, housing, and living expenses, making it possible for students like him to pursue higher education without overwhelming stress. He would like to tell donors, “THANK YOU!! Such a simple phrase, but there’s not a whole lot of words (or maybe it requires too many words!) to express the impact of scholarships in the lives of students. College is expensive, and living is expensive, and honestly I think a lot of students wouldn’t choose an academic route without the financial assistance donors provide—I know I wouldn’t have! Your gifts literally change lives, and in this way, perhaps, money does buy happiness! You may not see the direct impact of your giving, but rest assured the indirect impact is all around you!”

  Beyond the lab and classroom, Austin’s passion for learning extends into his free time, where he enjoys reading, running with the Athens Road Runners, baking, and tackling small craft projects. Family time remains a priority, and he even boasts the unique talent of being able to wiggle his ears fun reminder of his multifaceted personality.

  While Austin’s post-graduation plans are still taking shape, he is confident in the skills and resilience he has developed at UGA. Whether pursuing a career in industry as a researcher or transitioning into academia as a professor, Austin is committed to using his knowledge and experience to serve others and communicate scientific discoveries in an accessible, engaging way.   Tell us about your plans following graduation and what you would like to say to donors who have supported your education.

  I was a PhD student in Nutritional Sciences and completed my Dietetic Internship at UGA. Some of my favorite things on campus were taking long walks in the fall and attending football games.

  I have recently graduated from UGA and I am now an NIH postdoctoral fellow and registered dietitian at Pennington Biomedical in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I am working to individualize nutrition recommendations to better address weight regulation and prevention of obesity. 

  I have benefited from multiple FACS scholarships including the Mirian Wang Nutrition Scholarship that alleviated the financial burden of perusing graduate education in Nutritional Sciences, which has allowed me to focus on how my research can help the greater community. These scholarships also helped me stand out as a candidate after graduation and facilitated my ability to secure my first professional nutrition research position.

  I want to thank the donors of FACS because their investments in me and my peers expands the opportunities for UGA FACS students both on campus and after graduation.

  First FACS Chair Established

  Bill Flatt earned his first dollar from plowing a mule and picking cotton in the Tennessee heat.

  His grandmother made sure he set aside some of his earnings for the church and saved the rest for college.

  That discipline he established early in his life stuck.

  By his 80th birthday, Flatt had given over $1 million to the University of Georgia, creating seven endowed funds and two professorships in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS).

  His latest contribution is the establishment of the Bill and June Flatt Chair in Foods and Nutrition within FACS, the first chair in the college’s 105-year history.

  Connie Rogers, head of the FACS department of nutritional sciences, has been named the first Bill and June Flatt Chair.

  Honoring Love and Learning: The Betsy Barnard Sages Professorship

  In honor and loving memory of his wife, Betsy, Ron Sages created the Betsy Barnard Sages Professorship in Financial Therapy and Financial Planning. Their shared passion for understanding human behavior – Betsy in elementary education and reading recovery, and Ron in behavioral therapy as it relates to personal finance – inspired a lifetime of meaningful conversations and discoveries. Together, they explored the fascinating intersections of education, psychology, and financial therapy, a journey that continues to shape lives today.

  Ron’s path to behavioral finance wasn’t exactly planned. After studying psychology as an undergrad and completing a master’s in finance and taxation, he spent 35 years building an investment management company, all the while recognizing how deeply human behavior and money are intertwined. Over time, he witnessed countless clients make self-destructive financial decisions, which fueled his belief that there had to be a better way to help them. This curiosity led him to Kansas State University, where he earned a PhD in Personal Financial Planning with an emphasis in behavioral and financial therapy, an emerging field focused on addressing the emotional side of money.

  Ron’s studies weren’t just his – they became a shared passion with Betsy. He recalls countless conversations with her about the behavioral aspects of finance and how people’s past traumas shaped their financial habits. Betsy was fascinated by Ron’s research, and their discussions helped pave the way for new approaches in the field. Even Ron’s firm started offering financial therapy, blending Betsy’s love of education with his behavioral expertise.

  After Betsy passed, Ron and their daughters wanted to honor her memory in a permanent, impactful way. With strong ties to Kansas State and the University of Georgia, the idea of an endowed professorship seemed fitting. The family was overjoyed when Dr. Kristy Archuleta, one of Ron’s former professors at Kansas State, was named the first Betsy Barnard Sages Professor at UGA – a full-circle moment that honored both Betsy’s legacy and Ron’s academic journey.

  Ron, the first male graduate of Kansas State’s online PhD program, is now an integral part of UGA’s Financial Planning Program, where he teaches advanced courses and champions the integration of financial behavior therapy. His belief in the importance of this field is unwavering, and he continues to inspire the next generation of financial planners to consider not just the numbers, but the behavior behind them – a vision that he and Betsy shared.

  Through the professorship, Ron continues to honor Betsy’s legacy, ensuring that their shared love for behavioral therapy and education lives on, inspiring new generations of financial planners to help clients build healthier financial lives.

The Heritage Society was established by the University of Georgia Foundation Board of Trustees in 1995 to recognize the generosity of alumni and friends of the university that have pledged planned gifts to the University of Georgia.

The UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences proudly introduces the Creswell Circle, an exclusive annual giving recognition circle celebrating individuals who made substantial gifts to FACS during the most recent fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Cress Circle members enjoy the privilege of being recognized as a member of the UGA Presidents Club as well as exclusive benefits.

Senior Signature

Graduating seniors may choose to participate in the Senior Signature tradition by making a minimum individual gift of $30. $10 will be designated to the Senior Signature fund and the remaining amount to the College of Family and Consumer Sciences fund of your choice.
