Mission
UGA's Center on Human Development and Disability (CHDD) educates, informs, and serves people with disabilities and the communities where they live, learn, work, and contribute.
Vision
A future where people with disabilities have the opportunities, relationships, and support that they need to belong and contribute to the communities of their choice.
A Part of a Network
Since 1963, CHDD has been apart of the University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs) network and ranks as one of the UGA’s oldest continuously-funded federal programs. The UCEDD Network is a national system of 68 university-based centers working to promote independence, productivity, and community inclusion for individuals with developmental and other disabilities.
We Believe In
- Strong families - Families that are central to individual and societal well-being have inherent value.
- Friendships and Community Membership - Children and adults with disabilities thrive when they are meaningfully included in school, work, recreation, and places of worship.
- Economic Security and Real Jobs - Adults with disabilities want to work-and can work.
- Human Rights - People with disabilities live as equal citizens, free from exclusion and abuse.
- Access to Cutting-Edge Technology - Assistive technology allows individuals with disabilities to participate more fully in all aspects of life.
Our History
The University of Georgia is the state’s flagship institution of higher education. Chartered in 1785, the University of Georgia is the nation’s first state-chartered university. As the first land grant institution in the nation and the capstone of the Georgia Board of Regents University System, the university’s teaching, research, and service missions focus enormous resources to improve the quality of life throughout Georgia and the nation.
Our Staff
We are proud to be a community where everyone belongs. Behind everything we do is an incredible team of dedicated, passionate, and caring individuals who make a difference every day. Our staff bring a wealth of knowledge, unique talents, and a shared commitment to creating a welcoming, supportive environment where everyone feels valued.
Our Community Advisory Council (CAC)
Our CAC helps guide our work to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Through shared experiences, insights, and community perspectives, the CAC helps us stay focused on the needs, priorities, and voices of the people we serve.
Disability History Symposium
Our annual Disability History Symposium brings people together to celebrate disability history, elevate diverse voices, share knowledge, and recognize the contributions and experiences of people with disabilities. Each year, this event creates opportunities for learning, connection, and meaningful conversations that help build a more inclusive and accessible community.
Following the tremendous success of our 2026 symposium, we are excited to begin looking ahead to our 10th Annual Disability History Symposium in 2027! Over the years, this gathering has continued to grow as a space for education, reflection, and community engagement. Stay tuned for the announcement of next year's theme and date.
