- Why I chose my major
Many students change majors during undergraduate years, but I never thought I’d be one of them. As a freshman I was certain of my path as a nutritional sciences major on a pre-med track and part of the Honors College. I began research in the Human Nutrition Lab and enjoyed the research process, collaboration and presentations. My mother and grandmother were both College of Family and Consumer Sciences graduates, so I wanted to continue the family tradition.
Over time, however, I found my science classes were not as fulfilling as I had hoped. Through prayer and soul searching, I realized I need to change. I always loved interacting with people and have an affinity for communication. I considered how I might use my gifts to impact issues that concern me, such as the problems facing rural communities. I began to consider public relations, social entrepreneurship and possibly law school.
My family, all FACS graduates, encouraged me to look into the consumer journalism major which has now transitioned into social entrepreneurship, explaining that it combines human interest, social justice and argument presentation/framing, all necessary skills for law school preparation. Additionally, my FACS advisors explained how social entrepreneurship would provide me the ability to explore financial planning, which could prepare me for the dual degree program combining a law degree with a master’s in financial planning.
I decided to double major in Public Relations through Grady and Social Entrepreneurship through FACS. Having three college homes, Grady, FACS and Honors, has afforded me the best possible undergraduate experience and preparation for law school and a fulfilling, productive life.
- What I like most about FACS
From my first day at UGA and despite the pandemic, FACS made me part of a caring community. The value placed on personal growth and family life extends to students, keeping us close, included and challenged. Our college invites all to be involved at the level we choose, and the opportunities continue after graduation. I recently attended the AAFCS Leadership summit, where I learned the history of FACS and witnessed the continuing support of professionals throughout their careers and after retirement.
- Post-graduation plans
After graduation, I will attend law school at the University of Georgia School of Law as a UGA Scholar Merit Scholarship recipient. I hope to use my skill set to better the lives of rural Georgia residents.
