HDFS student awarded $7,100 scholarship from Phi Upsilon Omicron

What drew you to FACS?

What drew me to FACS was HDFS! I love learning about people and the idea of having a major that takes so many disciplines that interest me and uses it to form a holistic approach to looking at how humans grow and thrive. I love how welcoming it feels and the relationships you can build with the faculty and staff. I feel very supported and connected during my journey here!

What are your plans post-graduation?

I am currently applying to graduate school! I am really passionate about mental health research, outreach, and practice so I am applying to programs within that realm!

What are you involved with here?

Within FACS, I am a Double Dawgs student working in the Social Determinants of Child Development Lab under Dr. Caughy. Right now, I’m actually working on a CURO project that looks at protective factors that support children’s mental health in the face of discrimination. I also previously served as the Vice President of Phi Upsilon Omicron, the honor society for Family and Consumer Sciences, where I helped coordinate our professional service projects for initiation which won the Regional Award twice!

Outside of FACS, I’m an undergraduate student worker with UGA’s Archway Partnership through the Public Service and Outreach unit. I assist staff with different community development projects that connect university resources with local needs. I’m also active in the UGA Wesley Foundation, where I serve in the Diversity Ministry and as a Student Discipler, mentoring students and helping build an inclusive environment.

What does Phi U mean to you?

I love Phi U (Phi Upsilon Omicron, the family and consumer sciences honor society) because it connects students from so many different backgrounds (Fashion Merchandising, HDFS, Nutrition/Dietetics, Consumer Economics, etc.) under the common goal of taking what we’ve learned in class and really using it to serve our campus and the larger community here in Athens. It’s really been a place where I’ve been able to grow as a leader, engage in service, and connect with other students. Winning the scholarship means a lot to me, I feel like I have the support of Phi U behind me as I continue to pursue my educational and professional goals.
