College helped prepare Katz to be a leader
- Major/year graduated
- BSFCS in Human Development and Family Science, 2018
- Current occupation/location
- I am the manager of Value-Based Care Programs for Wellstar Health System, Atlanta
- What do you love about your current role?
- I love that my role contributes to improving the quality, cost, and accessibility of healthcare for both my local community and people across Georgia.
- How did your time at FACS help prepare you for your life or career?:
- My classes in FACS taught me all about the reciprocal relationship between people and their environment. This learning has served as my baseline as I've navigated my post-graduate path, transitioning from social work to policy research, to government work, and now into healthcare. More importantly, FACS prepared me to be a leader. My leadership experiences in FACS taught me that I wanted to spend my career helping my community and the people who live in it. This early leadership development was fundamental to understanding the type of work I wanted to do and the impact I wanted my work to have.
- What is one memorable experience you had as a student in FACS?
- As a FACS student, I had the opportunity to intern at the Love and Money Center (at the time, The ASPIRE Clinic). My experiential learning at the Love and Money Center was foundational to my professional, leadership, and academic development. I learned so much from the therapists and counselors across the mental health counseling, financial planning, nutrition, and legal services programs. Opportunities like FACS internships helped me figure out what I wanted to do after graduation, prepared me for graduate school, and readied me for the workforce. Day to day in my current role, I still find myself using skills I learned during my internship at the Love and Money Center.
- What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were a student?
- Learn as much as you can. FACS has phenomenal course offerings in a range of disciplines. My career path has not been linear. However, learning across disciplines in FACS gave me the ability to successfully pivot industries. In hindsight, if I had recognized the opportunities that FACS afforded me, I would have taken advantage of many more learning opportunities during my four years of undergrad.
