Geier named college’s first associate dean for research

Charles Geier, a professor in the department of human development and family science, has been named the inaugural associate dean for research in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Geier, who also serves as associate director of the college’s Center for Developmental Science, begins the new role Aug. 1.
In this newly created role, Geier will enhance the college’s research infrastructure, support faculty in securing grants, promote interdisciplinary collaborations and elevate the visibility of FACS research.
“FACS is a highly research-oriented college and we could not be more thrilled to have Dr. Geier as our first associate dean for research, a role that reflects our commitment to improving human health and well-being,” FACS Dean Anisa Zvonkovic said. “Expanding funding sources and interdisciplinary work is so important for our future and is vital to generating scholarly work that improves people’s lives. Dr. Geier brings to this position an outstanding record as a collaborative scholar, a high level of sophistication with funders and strong expertise in computing and data sciences.”
A noted developmental cognitive neuroscientist, Geier came to UGA in 2023 as part of a UGA presidential hiring initiative in data sciences and artificial intelligence.
“His intention to work with faculty on developing their research skills of all sorts and his alignment with the college’s interdisciplinary mission positions us so well for the future,” Zvonkovic said. “I look forward to working with him in this capacity.”
Geier received his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 2009. He previously served as a faculty member in the Pennsylvania State University department of human development and family studies from 2011-23.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve as associate dean for research in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences,” Geier said. “I look forward to partnering with the FACS community to elevate and expand our research activities in ways that advance our shared mission and impact.”
