FINDING PEACE: CONFLICT, FORGIVENESS, & RECONCILIATION

Join us to experience South Africa as you never have before! This program studies firsthand the devastating effects of conflict, specifically apartheid in South Africa. We will learn how leaders met crises and stayed resilient through persecution and traumatic events. We will also experience how ordinary people do extraordinary things to continue pursuing peace, forgiveness & reconciliation.

TRAVEL DATES: MAY 13-24, 2024

A unique opportunity for UGA undergrad and graduate students to participate in a study abroad that will experience the impact of conflict, the steps of forgiveness, and what reconciliation looks like firsthand. The experience will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, during the Maymester of every other year (even years only).  

This course will focus on forgiveness and reconciliation. It will study firsthand the devastating effects of conflict, including apartheid in South Africa. We will learn how leaders met crises and stayed resilient through persecution and traumatic events. We’ll also experience how ordinary people do extraordinary things to continue pursuing peace, forgiveness & reconciliation. This course will showcase the detrimental effects of conflict on individuals, families, communities, and societies and the healing effects of forgiveness and reconciliation throughout difficult situations and circumstances.

Learning Outcomes

Students who engage in this study abroad will experience the following: 

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of conflict and its effects on individuals, families, communities, and societies at large
  2. Discover how conflict can lead to numerous disparities and inequalities, including economic
  3. Experience poverty, wealth, and inequity in varying circumstances
  4. Recognize how conflict has generational impacts & effects
  5. Learn about conflict resolution and the reconciliation processes 
  6. Practice & apply forgiveness in your own life and search for peace
