How to Apply

Domestic Applicants

Application materials are available through the Graduate School Admissions Office. Please send directly to the Graduate School:

  1. A completed application (including application fee)
    • if applying to the Griffin campus, be sure to select that option during the application process
  2. One unofficial or official transcript from each institution of higher education that granted a degree
  3. Standardized Tests- Not Required but encouraged for PhD and MS (with thesis) applicants.  Optional for MSNT applicants
    1. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores:
      1. GRE institution code is 5813
      2. GMAT program code for all M.S. degree options is Z95-TV-06
      3. GMAT program code for the Ph.D. program is Z95-TV-07
  4. Two letters of recommendation (letters are submitted electronically through the Graduate School application system)
  5. Statement of Purpose following the required guidelines
  6. A resume or vita

In addition, please send directly to the Department's Graduate Coordinator Assistant:

  1. An Application for Assistantship (if applying for a graduate assistantship)

Your applications will be reviewed by a committee of FHCE Graduate Faculty and the Graduate School.

International Applicants

Admission materials are available through the Graduate Admissions Office. Please also visit the Graduate School's International Supplemental Information website then send directly to the Graduate School:

  1. a completed application (including application fee)
  2. one official or unofficial transcript from each institution of higher education that granted a degree
  3. official proof of degree(s) awarded
  4. if from a non-English speaking country, official TOEFL or IELTS scores
  5. Standardized Tests- Not Required but Encouraged for PhD and MS (with thesis) applicants.  Optional for MSNT applicants

    • GMAT program code for all M.S. degree options is Z95-H2-68
    • GMAT program code for the Ph.D. program is Z95-TV-07
    • We may request a GRE or GMAT waiver on your behalf under certain conditions outlined below

The minimum English proficiency scores are:

  • TOEFL: 80 or higher with 20 or higher on each of the Speak and Write sections
  • IELTS: 6.5 or higher overall with no single band (score) below 6.0

Your applications will be reviewed by a committee of FHCE Graduate Faculty and the Graduate School.

  • You should have completed a course in statistics (equivalent to STAT 2000) and microeconomics (equivalent to ECON 2106). If applying to the financial planning concentration you should have completed a course in risk management (equivalent to RMIN 4000). If applying to the Ph.D. program you should have completed an intermediate microeconomics course (equivalent to ECON 4010) and provide evidence of the successful completion of courses in statistics and calculus.

  • The application deadline is January 15 for all who seek a graduate assistantship. Graduate assistantships are typically awarded for an academic year (beginning Fall semester). On-campus M.S.-NT applicants may matriculate Fall or Spring semesters.  Ph.D., M.S. thesis, and M.S.-NT Online applicants may matriculate Fall semester only. 

    If you are not seeking financial aid, the application deadlines are:

      • *December 1st For PhD students in order to be considered for priority scholarship/assistantship funding
      • January 5th and again on February 1st for  joint MAcc/MS in Financial Planning
    • Spring Semester - November 15th (only Double Dawgs and on-campus M.S.-NT applications considered)

    International Applicant Deadlines

    • Fall Semester - April 15th (all FHCE degree program applications considered)
    • Spring Semester - October 15th (only Double Dawgs and on-campus M.S.-NT applications considered)
  • If you are considering applying to the Ph.D. program without first completing a master’s degree, please note that we seek applicants who meet the following criteria:

    • 300 combined quantitative and verbal GRE score OR 57 combined quantitative and verbal GMAT score.
      • In 2014 the mean scores for applicants admitted to the UGA Graduate School were 308 (GRE combined quantitative and verbal) and 598 (GMAT total score). See Fact Book for details.
    • 3.5 undergraduate grade point average.
    • Evidence of the ability to contribute to the completion of a research paper (a published scholarly journal article, Honor’s thesis, CURO paper, etc.)
    • Outstanding letters of recommendation.

    You may also be asked to schedule an interview to discuss your qualifications and academic goals.

  • Test scores are no longer required for any of our MS or PhD degrees, but we may ask for one if we need help evaluating your application.  

    Applicants admitted by the University of Georgia Graduate School in 2019 had mean GRE scores of 153 (verbal) and 155 (quantitative). The mean scores of applicants admitted into our FHCE programs in 2014-2018 were similar: 153 (verbal) and 154 (quantitative). The University's mean score on the GMAT was 606. The Graduate School seeks applicants with a 3.0 or higher undergraduate GPA (3.5 for graduate coursework). For detailed information on the composition of admitted students see the most recent Fact Book published by the Office of Institutional Research

    For our MS-NT Financial Planning (online or on campus) and Consumer Analytics programs we may request a waiver of the GRE or GMAT on your behalf under certain conditions. The Statement of Purpose allows you to indicate if you meet one or more of the following four criteria:

    1. earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline with at least a 3.0 GPA and have a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience and can demonstrate in your statement of purpose/personal interview that you possess the perspective, the intellectual capacity, and the drive and determination to successfully complete the MS-NT program;
    2. hold, in good standing, a designation relevant to your intended field such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), applicable FINRA licenses, or equivalent; [For Financial Planning majors only]
    3. have completed a minimum of nine credits of graduate course work at a regionally accredited college or university in a related field with a 3.5 GPA or higher; or
    4. previously earned a graduate degree in a related field.​
